Stickers, Decals, and Labels
Learn Some of the Differences and Applications
What's the difference?
This is a question that many people would answer in different ways. Most people know how to describe a sticker and will lump these three types of stickers in the same category, but there are a few key differences that give each one their own identity.
Stickers
Technically, all three of these are stickers, but labels and decals are more like variants of stickers that have specific purposes. Stickers themselves are quite simply printed designs, often small and non-intricate, that are peeled off of a backing paper and applied directly onto the surface they are being put on. These often include logos, relatively large lettering, small artworks, or pictures, and usually don't have very intricate die-cuts as to avoid complications during the application process.
Labels
Labels are very easy to differentiate from stickers and decals, because it is mostly what is printed on them that sets them apart. While both decals and stickers are usually centered around an artistic design or large pictures, labels are all about information. Labels can be as simple as a small sticker on a box that contains a list of its contents, or can be as important as the design that wraps around a product. In the latter case, this would include all of the information about the product, its name, ingredients, company logo, etc...
Decals
Now, Decals are where some people will start to have differing definitions. Some will say a decal is just a sticker that's bigger. Others may say it's a sticker that's meant to be outside. In reality, while these factors are included in the differences between decals and stickers, the main difference is in application.
Decals are usually applied using a special transfer paper. This transfer paper's main advantage is that it allows you to easily apply designs with intricately cut out lettering or artwork that would otherwise be very difficult. It also helps with applying large designs that would be difficult to apply as stickers because of wrinkling or stretching.
Some decals are also applied with water as part of the process, which allows you to reapply and adjust until you have it placed perfectly.
What's the Same?
When it comes to similarities, most are obvious. Each option is adhesive, contains some form of design, information or photo, and is applied onto a surface.
